We are heading to Brisbane, Australia, to have a chat with local legend Johnny Rico! Where are you from and where are you living now?

I’m originally from Sydney, now relocated to Brisbane.

How did you come up with your DJ name?

I used to work in the film industry. Some movies included Star Wars Episode 3, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Mission Impossible 2, and a few others. The first film I worked on was with the guys from Tippet Studios who did the VFX on Starship Troopers. The lead actor was called Johnny Rico in the film, and apparently I look just like him. So the first day I walked on set, everyone said, ‘OMG, it’s Johnny Rico’ and the name has stuck ever since.

Where did your musical journey begin?

When I first purchased my Technics 1200s in 2001, I began performing in Sydney’s pubs and clubs.

What made you decide to take up DJing?

I was exposed to house music since the late 1980s, participated in the Sydney party scene in the early 1990s, and then made the decision to purchase some decks.

What are some of your interests/hobbies/passions outside of streaming/DJing?

I spend a lot of time producing music, and I recently launched my own label, Naked Force. In my free time, I enjoy playing video games.

When did you start streaming on Twitch?

My streaming journey began in October 2021.

Is there anything you really hope to accomplish in your life, whether it be related to music or not?

I’ve reached the top 10 in Melodic House & Techno thus far, but my goal is to have a number one hit on Beatport.

Who are some of your favourite streamers? Why?

What is your favourite genre to play? Why?

Progressive House, Melodic House & Techno. I love chord progressions, uplifting melodies that stick in your subconscious

What are some of the most memorable events you’ve participated in or streamed?

Being a part of the Ken Jones charity event was a true pleasure, as it was for such a worthwhile cause.

What does Team Brisk mean to you?

Being part of a supportive community where we all have a common goal of sharing our passion of music.

What’s your favourite thing about DJing on Twitch?

Definitely the community, it’s amazing the people you meet from all around the world who appreciate your music.

What is a challenge you’ve faced as a DJ/streamer?

Probably time zones, a lot of my viewers are from the States so as I’m finishing my set, they are waking up. Oh and the crap NBN we have here in Australia, internet can just drop out with no warning.

Do you have any special projects, streams or events you would like to tell us about?

Every time I finish a new track, I always premiere it on Twitch. I love playing a newly produced track to the Twitch family.

Where are you from and where are you living now?

Although I was born in East Texas, my family migrated when I was five years old. My family relocated to several American locations before settling in Orlando, Florida, when I was thirteen years old.

How did you come up with your DJ name?

I had to come up with something because, after years of house parties, I was beginning to move into the club scene after DJing for around three years without using a DJ name. I gave the name Slick a lot of thought because I really wanted it to be a name that, if someone uttered it, I would definitely hear and respond to. My mother has called me this nickname since I was born, so I decided to take it and run with it! Slique is the spelling I chose!

What’s your equipment list?

Right now, I have a Pioneer S11 mixer, two Technic 1200 50th Anniversary turntables, and Ortofon VNL cartridges and needles.

Where did your musical journey begin?

My interest in learning how to DJ began after I actually relocated to Florida, even though I’ve always had a good ear for music. In the late 1980s, equipment was hard to come by. in particular when you are only fifteen years old.

What made you decide to take up DJing?

Scratching!!! LOL, I was quickly hooked on Miami Bass music as soon as I heard it when I moved to Florida in 1985!

What are some of your interests/hobbies/passions outside of streaming/DJing?

BMX. From the time I was eleven until I was approximately twenty-five, I raced. At the ages of ten and eleven, my nephew won multiple national and international championships.

When did you start streaming on Twitch?

July 2022 was when I began my streaming journey.

Is there anything you really hope to accomplish in your life, whether it be related to music or not?

Who are some of your favourite streamers? Why?

Someone from the Brisk team? It’s incredible to witness DJs who can motivate a DJ like myself; everyone I’ve watched has such a unique talent.

What is your favourite genre to play? Why?

Bass, Breaks, Freestyle! There is a certain energy that takes me away for a while when listening to it.

What are some of the most memorable events you’ve participated in or streamed?

‘I Love Freestyle Fridays’ has to be the winner thus far. It was Friday night that I met so many amazing folks from all over the world. Over the past year and a half, I have made so many friends on Twitch that I get to look forward to seeing them every week and catching up over music.

What does Team Brisk mean to you?

It entails being a member of a close-knit group of outstanding DJs and people in general. Although the world is a wild place, having friends all across the world is amazing.

What’s your favourite thing about DJing on Twitch?

Being free to express myself without receiving criticism or advice about DJing from promoters, club owners, program directors, or guests.

What is a challenge you’ve faced as a DJ/streamer?

Mostly getting my stream optimised. The easy part is all the DJing!

I appreciate that that many of you will have already engaged in some debate as to the pros and cons on the new DJ category that is incoming on Twitch. But, as a team owner with more DJs than not, I have some grave concerns as to how this will impact us all. I for one, do not wish to become a corporate jukebox DJ who has to select my playlist from a selection of ‘industry approved’ music in order to not receive DMCA strikes and remain on the platform. I would prefer the selection of music, artistes and labels I support to be based on my choices, and not those of others. After all, our choices of music are what goes a long way to making us all unique as DJs and artistes.

I recently broke down my income to my viewers over the past 5 years and many were shocked. I’ve been recieving 50% of the majority of my subs, less 5% to the U.S government, less 34% to the Australian government, which leaves me with 11% minus running costs each month. So, I’ve been working 70-90 hours every month on streaming activities for just 11% of which I have to pay my bills with. I recently moved to a 60/40 income split, and I’m awaiting my first pay cheque from Twitch to see how that looks, but even then, that’s just 21% to me when all has been taken away. I am unsure as to how this will look when further ‘licensing’ revenue is removed, it may mean that it is no longer viable, I simply don’t know. I believe that Twitch should swallow the licensing fee, not the streamers. It should already be factored into the large cut that they already take. Without knowing what the proposed licensing rate is, I don’t even know if this is beneficial anymore. I will pursue it regardless, but the future is uncertain.

I agree that artistes and labels should be remunerated for their work, that’s not the question. But this ‘solution’, could potentially cripple many people, including me. I welcome your thoughts.

“Today we’re announcing a dedicated program that will enable DJs to stream the vast majority of popular music in a new DJ Category. This is made possible by a first-of-its-kind partnership with hundreds of companies, including all of the major labels–Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music and a large number of independent labels and other rights holders represented by Merlin. We’re proud to be the first major service to provide a safe, long-term home for DJs to livestream, and we are excited to now be able to promote and support these creators as they build communities on our service and beyond.

DJs have a special place on Twitch. Since early 2020, the number of DJs streaming on our service has more than quadrupled, and tens of thousands have been able to build and monetize communities of music fans here. Simply put, the Twitch community loves DJs, and we believe we are the best service in the world to help these creators reach their full potential.

But DJs have historically faced serious challenges on the internet. DJs often leverage pre-recorded music from other artists as a critical part of their creative expression and livestreaming those DJ performances over the internet therefore requires clearing applicable rights. With the new DJ Program, DJs will be able to continue to grow and engage with the communities they have built on Twitch within a framework that makes it easier to compensate musicians.
One of our core values as a company is that we support creators of all types. When DJs use music created by others, it’s important that any revenue generated on Twitch also be shared with those musicians. This is something many DJs have told us they agree with, but until now there has been no easy way to do so. To cover the cost of the music used in DJ live-streams, we will set aside a portion of earnings generated by DJ channels to be paid to musicians via music companies that represent them. These costs will vary based on how a channel monetizes. For most streamers, Twitch will be splitting these costs 50/50 with the streamer, although initially Twitch will absorb more of the cost. Twitch is covering the costs for DJs who aren’t yet monetizing. Non monetizing streamers will not be financially impacted.

It’s crucial that DJs understand the status quo on Twitch was not sustainable, and any viable future for the community required we find a solution. We’ve worked with music partners over the past few years to develop this program. Without it, those who stream DJ content on Twitch without the necessary rights do so at the risk of receiving DMCA notifications and copyright penalties which could restrict their ability to stream on Twitch.
To help existing Twitch DJs adjust to this new program, Twitch will be offering a 1 year subsidy to help cover the difference in revenue that will be paid out to music companies and their musicians. The amount of the subsidy will gradually reduce over time as the service grows.

This program is only applicable to those who live-stream as DJs, and does not apply to other uses of music. DJs will need to opt-in to a new agreement that will apply to all streaming on their channel. For those who only stream DJ content part-time, we recommend creating a second standalone channel dedicated to DJ live-streaming.

We are announcing this now to give DJs a heads up about what is coming. When we launch later this summer, DJs will be able to opt-in to the program without any immediate impact to their revenue. A few weeks later, we’ll be celebrating the launch of a DJ Category. We strongly encourage DJs to read through the specifics of the program on this page, so you know what to expect moving forward.

I’ve spent all day in between preparing music for tonight’s show and tearing myself apart in terms of possibly being able to afford to stream to you in a regular capacity anymore. I cut down my full time hours at my day job in order to stream as often as possible. The hope was that I could make up the difference by streaming. So far, I have been able to get by, but not without the help of my partner, who has bailed me out a few times here and there. I’m clearly not ‘cutting it’ every month in terms of financial independence, even with 30,000 followers. So, when you see those ‘busy’ and ‘lucrative’ streams, please understand the massive chunk of your money that goes to Twitch and various governments, before it gets anywhere near the streamers. People often see a ‘successful’ stream, but do not understand where all the income goes. They see 5/10/20/50 gifted subs and think streamers are living the dream. You have no idea how most of us really are not, we are just doing what we love, surviving, whilst giving the vast majority of our hard work and income to organisations who already take their fare share.

It truly breaks my heart to know that Twitch are prepared to potentially screw us DJs so hard, and, that a large number of us may not be able to afford to carry on. The fact is that Twitch should’ve had a licensing arrangement in place many years ago, but have continued to flaunt this obligation.

Hey everyone,

I’ve finally managed to come down from the high that was the 30,000 Twitch follower twelve-hour celebration from the weekend, and I wanted to extend a massive thank you to all of you for turning up and partying with me. What a blast it was. That was also my longest ever live set at nearly 13 hours, so I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

A huge, huge thank you for your continued support. It’s been a long five years in the making, but the channel, community, and team are continuing to go from strength to strength, and I couldn’t be more proud of everyone involved. You are all legends!

Where are you from and where are you living now?

I am from California born and raised, and moved to Washington, USA last year. 

How did you come up with your DJ name?

I am a raver and dancer first and foremost, and as a dancer, I could always feel the energy I could give to fellow ravers just by dancing my soul out. That draw to empower others through dancing is a lot how I feel about DJing and producing music. The feeling of being a conduit of energy to ignite dance is my biggest joy in music, and I felt the best representation of that would be the sun. I want to be the soul energy that nourishes the dancefloor.

Where did your musical journey begin?

My musical journey started when I was going through a really rough time in my formative years and had a good friend who happen to produce trance and make Happy Hardcore mixes. I use to jam to those mixes and through them found my love of Hardcore! 

What made you decide to take up DJing?

Since first stepping into a rave I could feel a drive towards DJs and the self expressionism present in their craft. For years I would be as close as possible to see how they intricately layered beats together. So when I was 17 years old I worked to buy myself a numark mixdeck to start my voyage into DJing.

What are some of your interests/hobbies/passions outside of streaming/DJing?

My biggest passion is dance and for me I enjoy expressing myself through spinning Poi and Contact Sword, I also enjoy board games/ Magic The Gathering with good friends. I am also working on producing my own music.

When did you start streaming on Twitch?
 
I started streaming on Twitch in the first few months of 2020, during the peak of COVID. I already had a weekly stream on Hardcore.fm and was feeling like I wanted a switch-up, so once events stopped, I still had the itch to spin tunes with friends. Thus, my journey into Twitch began. 

Is there anything you really hope to accomplish in your life, whether it be related to music or not?

I have been dedicating the last few years to learning music production, and I would love to make music that can inflame dance floors. I also would love to move forward in my career within the 🥁 Drum Roll 🥁 Solar Industry (I was Soulr before I made this choice). 

Who are some of your favourite streamers? Why?

I really enjoy loads of the US based Hardcore streamers such as JimniCricket, Iankhardcore, Doughboy, Dummy, this list goes on and on. But I also really enjoy Kutski, DJBrisk, and Ravine anything to tingle those Hard Dance vibes 😉

What is your favourite genre to play? Why?

I love playing Freeform with specs of other genres mixed in. I adore how long Freeform songs can layer together; the painting of two songs to create a new rhythm is my favourite part of DJing! The mixes of acid riffs, hard-hitting basslines, and almost space-like energy have always resonated with the music I want to DJ!  

What are some of the most memorable events you’ve participated in or streamed?

I was enthralled to be part of the Brisk b2b S3rl stream train. It was super cool seeing each DJ bring their A game and being on the bill with so many friends from far and wide! As for live events, being able to play at Hardcore Summer Camp, NorthKore, and Summer Lovin 2 have to be my highlights. Something about camping and hard beats just hits all the boxes.

What does Team Brisk mean to you?

Team Brisk is a collective of like-minded streamers working together to connect the world through music. Being part of Team Brisk is an honour because I feel like I can contribute to a higher degree to the connection of music across the world. It is also surreal since the Hardcore music that introduced me to this genre was music by Brisk and Ham.

What’s your favourite thing about DJing on Twitch?

Just being able to meet new people and hang with friends from across the whole wide world.

What is a challenge you’ve faced as a DJ/streamer?

Being able to continuously get new music and staying motivated to stick to a strict weekly schedule. The grind makes it worth it 😉

Thrust Tuesdays I play Freeform and other musical debauchery from 5-6pm PST.

Where are you from and where are you living now (if different)

How did you come up with your DJ name?

After some years of trying a couple DJ aliases, I decided to go wtih my real name.

What’s your equipment list?

3 Pioneer CDJ2000NXS2, Allen & Heath Xone:92 mixer, Boss DD-8 delay & RV-6 reverb pedals.

Where did your musical journey begin?

I think music has always been ingrained in my DNA, coming from a very music oriented family. My dad was in the music business for many years, my mom played various instruments and sang and was a music therapist, and my older sister has always been a singer since she could speak. Something about rhythms and hitting things loudly with sticks (lol) really drew me to drums and percussion at a very early age. I got my first and only drumset when I was about 12 years old. I learned how to play mostly by ear, putting my favorite CDs in the boombox (at the time it was bands like 311, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blink-182, Greenday, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit… you get the idea) and blasting through my headphones as I tried to play along. Growing up, I was always involved in all types of bands in and outside of school. Everything from concert band, jazz, reggae, marching band, indie rock, funk/fusion, I was always being exposed to all these different kinds of music and learning how to play drums to them. I really think being involved with all of this and constantly listening to lots of various genres of music helped shape me as an artist.

What made you decide to take up DJing?

Being introduced to the new Skrillex EP, Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites, for the first time in 2010.

What are some of your interests/hobbies/passions outside of streaming/DJing?

Making music. I started learning production using Ableton in 2020 alongside starting up on Twitch around the same time. Since then, production has been off and on, but these days I’m refocusing to put more time into making original music. Another music related hobby/passion would be playing drums, and I am working on integrating the kit into some streams alongside DJing. Outside of music, my wife and I enjoy spending time with our two aussie shepherd mix doggos, Remy and Bishop. Also, I enjoy eating pizza at any and all times.

When did you start streaming on Twitch?

April of 2020.

Is there anything you really hope to accomplish in your life, whether it be related to music or not?

I hope to release original music on labels both big and small. Just striving for quality music with quality labels. If I can make such an impact in people’s lives through music, provoking emotions both happy and sad, getting lost in the moment feeling every frequncy, or just changing someone’s day around for the better, that’s the biggest accomplishment I will always strive for. Traveling within and outside of the states for various DJ gigs is high up there on the list as well.

Who are some of your favourite streamers? Why?

SympulsMusic, Shades_of_Day, DJJustinNeal, dj_mia_maya, DjAmber_D, DavidTurnerMusic. These are my favourite streamers because each one of their streams are top quality and you can tell they have all put in countless hours of work to provide the best possible experience for their audience. I also love that none of them stay within certain parameters of their comfort zone, only playing one style or genre of music. These streamers push the boundaries in electronic music and inspire me to be a better person and DJ. Spending the smallest amount of time in any one of their streams, one will instantly notice these people’s talents, kindness, and quality music make the whole Twitch experience a worthwhile escape from reality.

What is your favourite genre to play? Why?

Techno. It has a large range of tempos to consider, so whatever I’m feeling at the moment it can be slow or fast techno. It still has that driving four to the floor kick pattern, so it is danceable, but as the DJ maestro I also see it as a challenge to keep it interesting and mix in creative ways, whether it’s subtle changes or abrupt mood shifts. With this genre, especially hypnotic techno, I feel that it’s not just one track that gives the dancefloor energy, but the mix and atmosphere it provides as a whole. The feeling is not really something you can define within the first few seconds of a song, but more about experiencing how multiple songs are infused together to achieve that feeling of getting lost in the music.

What are some of the most memorable events you’ve participated in or streamed?

The 17, 24, and 25 hour marathons were certainly the least memorable, memorable streams!
Getting to open for such acts over the years such as Big Gigantic, The Crystal Method, Emancipator Ensemble, Nadastrom, Crissy Criss, and Spinscott will always hold a special place in my heart.

What does Team Brisk mean to you?

The team is a group of like-minded streamers and artists who are not only showcasing their own talents on stream, but more importantly they are supporting and building up their fellow teammates. Whether it’s questions about tech issues or just going to another member of the team for personal advice, this team is all about community support and helping eachother out. We are all streamers and humans behind the camera at the end of the day, so having others there for you for the highs and the lows is what Team Brisk is all about.

What’s your favourite thing about DJing on Twitch?

The abilty to play what I want when I want and knowing people will be there having a good time really puts a smile on my face every stream day. Having that support along with the real-time feedback through text and emotes means so much to me.

What is a challenge you’ve faced as a DJ/streamer?

With streaming and DJing, you’re always having to learn new things and troubleshoot problems with all this technology and software being used. Over the years, I’ve learned to ask for help. If not a fellow DJ or streamer friend, then putting in the work and doing the research to figure things out. But chances are there’s someone out there who’s run into the same issue you’re having, so just reach out to someone. I remember some 11 years ago getting a gig and playing on CDJs for the first time. I didn’t really know what I was doing and didn’t think to ask, but I showed up with my USB drives that I had literally dragged and dropped a handful of songs onto and called it a day. Then of course when it comes time to DJ and I select tracks they’re analyzing in real time with no waveform to go off of, BPMs jumping up and down trying to get a read, no folders or category organization, meanwhile beatmatching is near impossible… but somehow I survived that night and got through the set. After that, a friend told me about Rekordbox and how the tracks should be analyzed through that program first before exporting the songs to USB. After learning that, playing my next gig was way less stressful! That’s why I like to reach out or send a message when I come across new DJs and/or streamers just starting out. I want them to know I’ve been in their shoes and lived through the trials and tribulations and there’s always a helping hand if needed.

Do you have any special projects, streams or events you would like to tell us about?

I am working on a self released EP of unfinished projects and past sketches that need wrapping up. After this is released for free, I will start working on some original material and see where it goes from there!

I’d just like to give a special shoutout for the Twitch viewers and supporters who have been there since the streams in 2020 and are still here today! You know who you are and I love you all so much. And to everyone else who supported this journey over the years and have pushed me to become a better streamer and DJ every. single. day.. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for believing in me and my vision.
