I’ve been a huge fan of The Prodigy since the very early days of the rave scene and their inception in 1990, so it came as a complete shock to hear that their frontman, Keith Flint had recently passed away. From hearing ‘Experience’ right through to ‘No Tourists’, their sound has helped shape electronic dance music across 3 decades and they have been ambassadors for British music globally. From picking up their early releases on white label, to them getting signed to XL Recordings then seeing them do a live PA at Club Kinetic, they’ve continued to blow me away.
My friend and old neighbour, Derek called me one day to ask about The Prodigy and their music. He also races motorbikes and was meeting up with Keith for the first time at the track and wanted to know more about his music. I remember being excited at the prospect of maybe getting to meet him through a mutual friend. Alas, it never happened.
Whilst we are all still reeling from the news, there are numerous reports regarding suicide as the reason for his untimely demise. We have lost far too many incredibly talented individuals to suicide and mental health, so let’s not overlook this important fact. If you are having issues of your own, reach out to your friends and family. Nothing is insurmountable with a little help. The Samaritans are a good people to contact if you need to talk to someone.
I really don’t have the words to put his passing into context, it’s a massive, massive loss for the electronic music scene and of course, for friends, family and fans.
